Motorsport Awards: Tom Harris Wins Driver of the Year

Tom Harris secured the title of Driver of the Year in the 2019 Motorsport Awards held on the 15th December. The Manchester-based driver becomes only the second person to win the accolade that is decided through a public vote. Harris, a BriSCA F1 driver, secured his second World Title this year competing for Team Davidson.

Winning the European title last season, Harris has not only become one the top racers in the UK, but has branched out, racing in the United States in the Knoxville Nationals and USAC National Sprint Car Championship. He has previously won the World and European titles in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

It is the second year in a row a British Stock car driver has won the Award, as Harris takes the crown from Stuart Smith Jnr. As ever, people power is at the heart of the Motorsport Awards, with 30 categories for high achievers in the motoring world.

Harris’ journey to the prestigious Motorsport Award began on Monday 7th October when nominations opened. He was one of the ten most nominated drivers by the time nominations closed on the 31st October.

Voting for the final ten opened on Monday 4th November on the Motorsport Awards website, closing for the final time on Monday 9th December at 6pm.

In winning the Award Harris beat six-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Ginetta GT5 racer Danny Harrison to second and third respectively. Hamilton’s plight with Mercedes-AMG this season saw him collect eleven wins and 413 points, a record for any driver over a single season. Harrison meanwhile made his debut in Ginetta’s this season racing for the Altima Academy with Mutation Motorsport
