Motorsport Awards: Brad Jones Wins Rider of the Year

The Motorsport Awards 2019 Rider of the Year went to Brad Jones. The British Supersport runner-up impressed the voting public this year securing 23 podiums over the 24 race season. Victory at Oulton Park was the highlight in a year where he also made an appearance in the World Supersport Championship.

Competing for Appleyard Macadam, the rider secured silverware at every round and was only beaten to the title by Jack Kennedy. Prior to 2019 Jones has been a front runner in National Superstock 600 and finished fifth in the Supersport standings in his debut year. His guest appearance in the World series saw him qualify fifth, holding off regular internationals despite using a standard gearbox compared to the WSS riders kit gearbox with different ratio’s.

Jones takes over the prestigious award from Peter Hickman who secured the inaugural prize in 2018. Like Hickman, Jones benefitted from the support of voters beating fellow nominee’s from the BSB, WSBK and MotoGP world alike.

His journey to the prestigious Motorsport Award began on Monday 7th October when nominations opened. He was one of the ten most nominated riders by the time the first stage of voting closed on the 31st October.

Voting for the final ten nominees opened on Monday 4th November on the Motorsport Awards website, closing for the final time on Monday 9th December at 6pm.

Jones’ success saw him beat a number of established names including world champion’s Jonathan Rea and Marc Marquez. Second place in the awards went to Isle of Man Senior TT winner Dean Harrison, while third went to BSB race winner Tommy Bridewell.
