F1: Mugello and Sochi added to 2020 Formula One season calendar

Formula One have announced that the Mugello Circuit in Italy is set to host its first Grand Prix in the sports history this September. The race is set to take place the week after the Italian Grand Prix at the typical home of Monza and will celebrate Ferrari’s 1000th race in Formula One.

The ‘Formula One Grand Prix of Tuscany Ferrari 1000’ has been confirmed for the weekend of September 11-13, and will add the fast and flowing track which is usually used by MotoGP to the ten currently announced Grand Prix that are due to be contested in the much changed 2020 World Championship season.

Mugello will become Italy’s fourth Grand Prix destination after Monza, Imola and Pescara. The track hosted five rounds in Formula 3000 in 1986, 1991, 1996, 1997 and 2000. However, apart some shakedown running from Ferrari has never seen top level open wheel racing meaning all teams will go in to the weekend with limited data and knowledge.

Formula One have also announced that the Russian Grand Prix will also be contested in 2020 with the Sochi Autodrom confirmed to host round ten two weeks later over the weekend of 25-27 September.

This will be Formula One’s seventh visit to the Sochi Autodrom, with all six previous races so far won by Mercedes-AMG.

Chase Carey, CEO and Chairman of Formula One, said in a statement surrounding the new additions.

“The Russian Grand Prix is a major moment in our season and we are looking forward to being back in Sochi in September. We are equally excited to see Formula 1 race for the first time at Mugello, an occasion that will mark Ferrari’s 1000 Grand Prix. Both races will be a huge boost for fans with more announcements on the next races in our calendar coming in the weeks ahead.”

Ten races are currently confirmed for this season, but with Formula One set to announce more in the near future, with Liberty Media having confirmed they expect to run 15-18 races in this shortened season.
