VW Cup: Kent tops Times to make it Two Poles in Two Rounds

Bradley Kent took his second pole position of the year, gaining him two points and continuing his perfect performance in qualifying for the Volkswagen Racing Cup.

After taking pole position at Oulton Park, all eyes were on Kent as we geared up for the second round of the season at Silverstone. Setting a 1:03.199, the Essex and Kent Motorsport driver was the benchmark time in the opening half. He would improve, yet not driver would beat his lap from the opening run.

A red flag stoppage was caused after Luke Alden spun off the track at Copse, needing to be recovered. He was third in class at the time of the stoppage, disappointed to not get more running in the Golf Mk7.

Kent continued to look untouchable throughout, eventually setting a personal best of 1:02.922 due to clear air on the short 1.6 mile circuit for his Scirocco. The only driver to set a lap time under 63 seconds, Kent will aim to emulate his brother’s success in the TCT/TCR UK Championship that race on track simultaneously at the VW Racing Cup.

After his domination at Oulton, Richard Gilbert was unable to repeat his speed at Silverstone. Struggling from the start, Gilbert was only able to manage a time of 1:05.025 and will start from fifth for Sunday’s opening race.

Instead it will be the returning Hankook Trophy driver Russell Joyce who starts second. With a personal best of 1:03.367 Joyce has the chance to not only collect his maiden podium, but a first race win for the Power Maxed Racing team.

Despite his slide, Alden will line up in third, having completed just two flying laps. His best time was under a second slower than Kent and with a new Scirocco for Sunday’s races will be a threat for the race win. Fourth meanwhile will be Paul Ivens, who like Joyce is returning to the series for the first time in 2020.

Gilbert will start from the final row, alongside former-BTCC driver Andy Wilmot, who despite not taking part in qualifying will be present on Sunday.
