VW Cup: Josh Coggan Secures Pole ahead of Memorial Weekend

Josh Coggan took his maiden pole position of the year for the JM Racing team that he co-runs. On the weekend of the Tom Walker Memorial Trophy, the local driver will be in the best position ahead of the Volkswagen Racing Cup finale.

Cold conditions welcomed the drivers to Donington Park as Bradley Kent set the initial pace on the National circuit. It would be the Essex & Kent Motorsport driver who caused the initial stoppage though as the tyre b ail at the chicane was knocked onto the racing line.

As engines cooled in the pitlane, the clouds loomed overhead, with all drivers preparing for the final ten minute sprint.

Howard Fuller, returning to the series for the first time since 2015, was determined to prove he hadn’t lost his touch, recording a 1:16.113 to go top of the times. His closest competition came from the Depper’s who each narrowed the gap, with Jack getting within 0.065 seconds.

The surprise though came right at the end, with Josh Coggan setting a 1:15.684 in the dying moments, displacing Jack Depper, who also knocked down the Team HARD driver.

Despite his best attempts, Fuller would have to settle for third, being joined on the second row by championship contender Andy Wilmot. Sitting just 10 points behind Richard Gilbert, it will be a prime opportunity for the Kent driver to seal his maiden VW Cup title.

Dramatically for the first time this season, Bradley Kent would not be on pole, coming across the line in fifth place ahead of Silverstone race winner Paul Ivens. The pair could yet be one’s to watch come the afternoon as Martin Depper failed to improve in the final few minutes, dropping him to seventh.

Gilbert will be forced to start the race from eighth after a lackluster session for the JM Racing star. With the title on the line though, expect fireworks from the Cheshire-born driver, as Russell Joyce rounds out the grid.

All Volkswagen Cup races will be broadcast online, with each race happening simultaneously to the TCT/TCR UK Championship, ensuring prime coverage for the fans at home.
