Opinion: Ferrari’s time to join IndyCar has come

Could one of the biggest manufacturers in the world join the IndyCar Series? They are evaluating it and talks have already happened. Here’s why there is no better time to make the move.

In 2022, IndyCar will introduce a fourth generation engine which will contain hybrid technology.

The technology will be used for at least six seasons and will provide stability for current manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda and is reasonably priced for any new manufactures who may want to join the championship.

With Formula 1 introducing a budget cap from next year, it may allow Ferrari to diversify.

Ferrari will be forced to make some of their F1 team personnel redundant and therefore are looking at either IndyCar or the FIA World Endurance Championship so that people can keep their jobs at Ferrari but to work for another motorsport series.

The Indy 500 has never been conquered by Ferrari and IndyCar has become increasingly attractive in recent years. Plus, North America is a very big market for car manufacturers that build and sell hyper cars and that includes Ferrari.

Roger Penske’s takeover last year may help IndyCar’s cause to get Ferrari onboard and discussions are ongoing between the two parties.

Ferrari’s multi-year partnership with Mission Winnow as a title sponsor has sparked controversy. Mission Winnow is owned by Phillip Morris International (PMI) with ties to former Ferrari sponsor Marlboro.

EU tobacco laws could bring Ferrari into trouble as the Mission Winnow sponsorship violates European rules that state promotion of tobacco is prohibited.

The PMI sponsorship was set to feature on the Ferrari F1 car at every race in 2020. However, should Ferrari be forced to not have the sponsorship on the SF-1000, then IndyCar could be a solution for Ferrari and Mission Winnow.

In USA, there are no restrictions so Ferrari would be able to have the Mission Winnow name on their IndyCar.

If Ferrari lose the legal battle then PMI may push Ferrari to compete in IndyCar.

Having Ferrari in IndyCar would be spectacular and it would be a significant moment for the championship.

2022 might just be the year that a new era for IndyCar and a new challenge for Ferrari begins.
