MX2: Geerts Doubles Up to Secure Riga GP Overall

The second moto in the MX2 class in the Grand Prix of Riga took a similar shape to the first race of the day. 

Jago Geerts took his first holeshot in the World Championship, and led from start-to-finish in the second moto of the day in Riga for the MX2 class. Geerts’ win was not entirely straightforward, he had some pressure from the F&H Kawasaki rider, Roan van de Moosdijk, late on. But Geerts was able to respond and stretch the gap back out. In the end, Geerts made it looks relatively easy as he took his first double win, on the way to his second career GP win, and his second of the season. 

Roan van de Moosdijk pushed hard at the end to take the fight to Geerts, but was unable to get close enough to make a pass. For van de Moosdijk, second place meant much of the same, since also last week the Dutchman finished second in the first race, and took second overall. This time it was 2-2 for second overall for the #39 who will now be aiming to go one better at the final Latvian race of the season at the weekend. 

F&H Kawasaki were double-represented on the podium, as Mathys Boisrame repeated his result from the first race to go 3-3 for third overall, a repeat of his result from last week.

Tom Vialle also repeated his result from the morning, meaning the Frenchman went 4-4 for fourth overall and gave up a total of 14 points to Geerts over the two Riga motos. Vialle’s lead in the championship now stands at eight points ahead of the Grand Prix of Kegums at the weekend. 

Maxime Renaux put some pressure on Vialle in the second moto, but was unable to make an impact on his compatriot. In the end it was 7-5 for fifth overall for the #959. In the second race, Renaux finished ahead of Jed Beaton who, as last week, had a better second moto than first, owing mostly to not crashing in the first corner of the second race. The #14 finished sixth, which was enough for sixth overall. 

Ruben Fernandez took seventh in the second moto, ahead of Mikkel Haarup, Ben Watson and Alvin Ostlund who completed the top 10. 

11th place went to Conrad Mewse, who fared much better in the Grand Prix of Riga than the Grand Prix of Latvia, going from no points in the latter to a 14-11 in the former for 12th overall. Behind the Briton in the second moto was Simon Laegenfelder, the German ahead of Cyril Genot, Richard Sikyna and Hardi Roosiorg who completed the top 15. 16th over the finish jump was Josh Gilbert, ahead of Bailey Malkiewicz, Jakub Teresak, Enzo Toriani and Ashton Dickinson who took the final point in 20th. 

Thomas Kjer Olsen retired from the race after a crash early on which presumably tweaked his broken shoulder blade. Rene Hofer also retired mid-race after a crash which caused some damage to his left arm or shoulder.
