MotoGP: Alex Rins declared unfit for remainder of Australian GP

Alex Rins has been declared unfit for the rest of the Australian GP weekend.

Alex Rins has been declared unfit from round 16 of the MotoGP World Championship at Phillip Island. Rins will fly back to Melbourne to undergo a CT scan on his leg to assess the ongoing issue.

This CT scan will allow Rins and the LCR team to further understand and evaluate his tibia and fibula. Rins admitted at the end of Friday’s practice that he is struggling more than expected with persistent pain in his leg.

The 27-year-old recently finished the Indonesia Grand Prix in ninth place after being injured most of the year. Rins’ injury was sustained in a crash in Mugello where the Spaniard landed on his legs.

It has been a year of highs and lows for Alex Rins with a surprise race win at COTA at the beginning of the year. Rins has also announced that he will join Monster Energy Yamaha next season.

The Championship will now start the Australian Grand Prix with just a 21-rider field in the premier class. We have yet to start a Grand Prix this season due to the increased number of injured riders.

The Australian GP will now run a revised schedule with the Grand Prix now taking place on Saturday. It was moved to Saturday due to high wind and rain expected on Sunday at Phillip Island. The MotoGP Sprint will now take place on Sunday for the first time in Grand Prix racing history.

“So disappointed in the end. The pain didn’t improve so this morning the Dr Charte made some exploration, he touched a little bit the leg and we decided to do a CT scan in Melbourne today to see if everything is under control and to evaluate from which part/bone this pain is coming from” Rins explained to motogp.com

“We don’t know exactly where the pain comes from, so we make the CT scan to check if it’s coming from the tibia or the fibula, we need to check.

“After the crash, I was completely fine, I could stand my leg and I put it in the air.”
