MotoE: Aegerter Wins in Jerez as Disaster Strikes for Granado and Ferrari

Dominique Aegerter took his maiden MotoE victory in Jerez and now leads the cup standings.

Once the Swiss rider hit the front, there was no looking back and he finished a thrilling race 2.688 sec ahead of Jordi Torres and Mattia Casadei.

Disaster struck on the penultimate lap when Matteo Ferrari misjudged an attempt to overtake and took himself and Eric Granado into the gravel and out of the chasing group.

The Race as it Happened

Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP) took the opportunity to break away from pole with Matteo Ferrari (Trentino Gresini MotoE) and Lukas Tulovic (Tech3 E-Racing) behind him while last week’s winner Eric Granado (Avintia Esponsorama Racing) dropped down to fifth.

Aegerter was under immediate attack from Ferrari who briefly hit the front at Turn 5, but the Swiss rider swiftly reclaimed the lead. Behind them Granado went hot into Turn 6 and ran himself and Tulovic wide, taking them down the order to eighth and tenth respectively. Ferrari made his move on Aegerter stick at Turn 9 but pushed both riders wide allowing Alejandro Medina (Openbank Aspar Team) to move into second. Medina pounced on the opportunity and took the lead at the final corner with Aegerter moving past Ferrari into second.

With five laps to go Aegerter and Ferrari were exchanging punches in second and third with Aegerter coming out top. He subsequently lined up a move on Medina through Turns 9 and 10 and claimed the race lead.

Granado was making his way through the field and swapped paint with Jordi Torres (Pons Racing 40) with four laps to go, the Brazilian now claiming 5^th. Ahead of them Medina and Ferrari ran wide, making way for Mattia Casadei (Ongetta SIC58 Squadracorse) into second and allowing Aegerter to build a gap out front. Medina fell into the clutches of Granado who made his move into Turn 13 and was fourth over the line.

The race was over for Medina with three laps remaining when he lost the front going into Turn 1 and found himself in the gravel. Granado meanwhile looked like a man on a mission and first overtook Ferrari for third swiftly followed by Casadei for second. A chasing group of four with Granado, Casadei, Ferrari and Torres had now formed to chase down Aegerter.

The penultimate lap turned dramatic when Ferrari misjudged an attempt to overtake into Turn 6. The Italian lunged under Casadei but could not make the move stick, lost control over his bike and sent both himself and a defenseless Granado into the gravel. Casadei was forced wide but did well to avoid Ferrari’s bike and rejoined the track in third behind Torres.

In the calm after the storm on the final lap Aegerter brought a now comfortable lead over the line for his maiden MotoE victory. Torres finished a lonely second and Casadei crossed the line in third. Right behind him Alex de Angelis (Octo Pramac MotoE) took fourth from Niccolo Canepa (LCR E-Team) with an overtake at the final corner.

Dominique Aegerter won the MotoE race at the Andalucia GP with Jordi Torres in second and Mattia Casadei completing the podium.

Casadei fought off Alex de Angelis and Niccolo Canepa who finished fourth and fifth respectively. Lukas Tulovic crossed the line in sixth ahead of Mike di Meglio and Josh Hook and the top 10 was rounded out by Xavier Simeon and Xavi Cardelus.

Maria Herrera crossed the line in 11^th less then a tenth from Jakub Kornfeil while Eric Granado, who had rejoined the race after the incident with Matteo Ferrari, was the last rider to complete the race in 13^th.

Ferrari, Alejandro Medina, Alessandro Zaccone and Tommaso Marcon recorded a DNF in Jerez.

Aegerter now leads the MotoE Cup 11 points ahead of Torres with Granado a further two points behind in third.

The next MotoE round will take place at Misano in mid-September.
