Moto2: A Look at Who’s Riding What for 2020?

The grid for the 2020 Moto2 World Championship has been completed, as we rev up for the second season in the Triumph 765cc era.

The biggest change going into 2020 is that the current Moto2 World Champion Alex Marquez has left the class to join older brother Marc Marquez in the Repsol Honda camp. This opened up an opportunity for former Pons HP40 rider Augusto Fernandez to partner the already signed Sam Lowes who joins the EG0,0 Marc VDS team.

With Fernandez leaving the PonsHP40 team, that left one ride available, which was taken by 2019 MotoE rider Hector Garzo, who made his Moto2 debut at Sachsenring onboard the Mistral Tech 3 bike in 2016.

2020 also sees Moto3 World Champion Lorenzo Dalla Porta make the step up to the intermediate class, joining fellow Italian Enea Bastianini at the Italtrans Racing Team. Dalla Porta isn’t the only rider to make the jump, he’s joined by Moto3 Leopard teammate Marcos Ramirez (American Racing Team) and Moto3 runner-up Aron Canet who joins the Angel Nieto Speed Up team.

We also see familiar faces return to the championship, Axel Pons rejoins the Moto2 paddock replacing Sam Lowes whilst Simone Corsi joins Stefano Manzi to form an all Italian affair at MV Agusta.

For the 2020 season, we lose KTM from the championship. Although they are still branded under the Ajo banner, the Red Bull KTM Ajo team will run the Kalex chassis, the chassis that brought the team double success in 2015 and 2016. The Ajo team retain 2018 Moto3 Champion Jorge Martin and have signed Japanese rider Tetsuta Nagashima to replace Brad Binder who moves up into MotoGP.

That’s not the only chassis change for the 2020 season, Angel Nieto Team have switched from KTM to the SF20T Speed Up Chassis.

Finally, Sam Lowes is not the only British rider on the Moto2 grid, Jake Dixon will join the Petronas Racing Team for the 2020 season after an impressive debut with the Angel Nieto KTM.
