Gaming: Codemasters finalising deal with Take-Two

Codemasters have been the developers and publishers behind some of the industry’s favourite racing games over the last 34 years, but what’s next for the Warwickshire based company?

Micro Machines, the Official Formula One gaming franchise and the iconic TOCA Touring Cars series are just a small number of some of the developers work since 1986, but a sale with American gaming giants Take-Two Interactive seems to be coming up very soon.

Stories and rumours have rumbled for a while about a possible sale of Codemasters, but with the company that is so well known for its development of the Formula One franchise with F1 2020 currently out, the news has broken recently that a possible sale is being discussed.

Take Two are a multi-billion dollar gaming leviathan. This is a company which owns Rockstar Games, famous for its Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises and 2K, who own several sporting franchises for annual release for the likes of the NBA, NHL and WWE.

Even for those outside the UK, this is an extremely interesting piece of news, as the 2K Sports developers have a huge budget to create some extensive and visually stunning games, and while this year has seen WWE 2K20 be a huge flop, with IGN one of the more favourable reviews at 4.3/10, is there an opportunity for Codemasters to receive some help whether that be in development or funding by Take-Two and 2K Sports?

However, speaking of the sale a representative for Take-Two said.

“Take-Two believes that the combination of Take-Two and Codemasters would bring together two world-class interactive entertainment portfolios, with a highly complementary fit between 2K and Codemasters in the racing genre”

If the sale goes through then Take-Two will have access to Codemasters current portfolio including the likes of Dirt/Dirt Rally, Grid, Project Cars and the Official Formula One gaming franchise.

Will this mean we see Formula One 2K and all the bells and whistles that 2K has included into making their sporting games incredibly immersive?

Time will only tell, but it’s certainly an exciting time for gamers who have become weary of Codemasters lack of development on the current iteration (F1 2020). Is this the shot that the game needs to re-invent itself?
