F1: Toto Wolff expected to make big announcement

According to reports in the German media, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is highly likely to step down.

Motorsport.total believe Wolff will see out his contract which expires at the end of 2020 but could announce his resignation before the season starts.

In a recent interview, Wolff said: “It is not just about whether I am extending my contract as team principal, but also what we are going to do with the company.”

Wolff may remain as a member of the supervisory board, similar to Niki Lauda’s role in the past, and therefore keep his 30% stake in Mercedes.

The remaining 70% belongs to Daimler, the Mercedes parent company. Their CEO, Ola Kallenius has said that there will be changes within the works Mercedes team.

Recent reports suggest that Lawrence Stroll cannot take control of Mercedes if he is to continue his commitment to Racing Point in the long-term at the same time.

However, Stroll could put Racing Point up for sale which would allow him to buy shares in Mercedes. A potential buyer is Dimitri Mazepin, father of F2 driver Nikita Mazepin. Mazepin wanted to buy Racing Point in 2018 but lost out to Stroll.
