F1 Driver Ratings: Singapore 2019

Sebastian Vettel finally won a race in 2019 as he led a surprising Ferrari 1-2 at the Singapore Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc was arguably the better driver and was unfortunate to not make it a hat-trick of wins as he lost out to his teammate during the pitstop phase.

Max Verstappen had a solid weekend to get back onto the podium but Red Bull were underwhelming on a track they were expected to be very strong at.

Neither Mercedes driver was on the podium for the second time this year. Lewis Hamilton lost out through a poor strategy but did not have the pace to make any overtakes whilst Valtteri Bottas was forced to play the team game and slow down to allow Hamilton to get ahead.

Here’s the Driver Ratings and as always, the order below is the finishing order of the Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen: 7.5/10

Lewis Hamilton: 7.5/10

Valtteri Bottas: 7/10

Alexander Albon: 7/10

Lando Norris: 9/10

Pierre Gasly: 8/10

Nico Hulkenberg: 8/10

Antonio Giovinazzi: 8/10

Romain Grosjean: 5.5/10

Carlos Sainz: 7/10

Lance Stroll: 5/10

Daniel Ricciardo: 7/10

Due to the drivers simply coasting around, doing laptimes that were generally 10 seconds slower than and many getting held up a lot, it makes Singapore a hard race to rate.

Also, drivers were in very different strategies so they may have finished outside of the points due to the team’s fault with strategy and there were many collisions with drivers’ races compromised.

I have given Lando Norris the highest rating, mainly for his outstanding race performance. Norris was driving on the streets of the Marina Bay for the first time and he did not put a foot wrong on the most challenging and demanding track of the season.

He was under a lot of pressure from Pierre Gasly and Nico Hulkenberg but kept them behind to score an excellent seventh place.

Daniil Kvyat gets the lowest rating after a very silly move on Kimi Raikkonen going into turn one. The overtake was never on and Kvyat would not have made the corner if Raikkonen was not there. A silly move by the Russian.
