F1 Driver Ratings: Hungary 2020

Lewis Hamilton cruised to victory in Hungary to become king of the Hungaroring. Max Verstappen managed to split the Mercedes with a superb race despite crashing on his way to the grid.

Valtteri Bottas salvaged third following a tough start as he dropped down the order and was forced to recover from a torrid getaway.

Lance Stroll had a great weekend as Racing Point showed their hand and will almost certainly be on the podium at some point this year.

As per usual, the order below is the finishing order of the race.

Lewis Hamilton: 9.5/10

Max Verstappen: 7.5/10

Lewis Hamilton gets the highest rating for a simply flawless weekend but I have to give huge credit to Kevin Magnussen and Haas.

Haas decided to pit both of their drivers at the end of the formation lap onto dry tyres and what a brilliant decision that was. I was surprised more runners at the back did not try this gamble.

Magnussen drove the perfect race too, managing his tyres well and finishing ahead of a Ferrari and a McLaren in ninth place.

However, the stewards awarded Magnussen and Romain Grosjean both a 10 second time penalty since the team gave instructions to the drivers on the formation lap. An outrageous decision since all the team did was tell their drivers to come into the pitlane.

Haas will be gutted as they have been robbed of what might be their only points this year after a fantastic race from Magnussen.

Nobody stood out was a poor performer in Hungary so it gives me a chance to explain how difficult it is to rate the drivers.

With only two different tracks raced on so far plus the factors of team mistakes and strategy, it is always hard to give the right rating.

Plus, this year everyone apart from Mercedes is up and down so judging great or bad drives and how much the car is an influence is tricky.

There is a two week break now before Silverstone and another triple-header as Formula 1 in 2020 is well and truly underway.
