F1 Driver Ratings: Hungary 2018

Lewis Hamilton extended his championship lead with a perfect weekend on a track where Mercedes were meant to be limiting the damage. Sebastian Vettel’s aggressive overtake on Valtteri Bottas could have ended with a DNF but he managed to come home in second place.

Kimi Raikkonen made it a double podium for Ferrari and the Finn’s 5th consecutive podium. When will he win a race?

Two drivers take the perfect score of 10/10 this week: Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly. Their weekends couldn’t be any better really. They both drove immaculately and they both made the most of the wet conditions in qualifying. Excellent performances.

For the first time this year, Charles Leclerc takes the lowest rating (5) after he failed to make it out of Q1 for the first time in China. Leclerc has admitted that he needs to improve in the wet conditions. He got sandwiched at the exit of the first turn by the Force India duo which was unlucky but it all came from a poor qualifying and a shabby start.

Despite this blip, I still rate Leclerc very highly and part of his lack of pace in the race in Germany and in Hungary in qualifying is down to the car. I just wanted to see Leclerc outperform his car and do something special, but it’s gone the other way instead.
