F1 Driver Ratings: Great Britain 2020

A dramatic final few laps of the British Grand Prix saw Lewis Hamilton limp home to claim a seventh win at Silverstone.

Max Verstappen’s late race pitstop in an attempt to set the fastest lap ultimately cost him the win as he could not quite catch Hamilton on the last lap.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was back on form with a superb weekend to take his second podium of the season despite Ferrari’s troubles in 2020.

Valtteri Bottas’ late race puncture came at the worst part of the circuit as he was forced to drive 3.6 miles with a deflated tyre which put him out of the points and the Finn is now 30 points behind teammate Hamilton in the championship.

As always, the order below is the finishing order of the Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc and Daniel Ricciardo were the two drivers of the weekend for me. Leclerc was dominant compared to teammate Sebastian Vettel.

Ferrari were expected to be dire at Silverstone yet Leclerc drove the car to its absolute limit to execute a stunning lap in qualifying and managed his tyres perfectly to withstand the midfield chargers.

Leclerc might have a season similar to Fernando Alonso in 2014 when he drove the wheels of the car to rescue a few podiums.

As for Ricciardo he managed his tyres very well too and was perhaps just one lap away from a podium spot as he was catching Leclerc very quickly after he managed to get by the McLaren drivers.

Had Ricciardo not got stuck behind Norris for so long the outcome may have been even better but his overtake on Norris was brilliant, coming from quite far back. If this form can continue, Ricciardo could be on the podium at some point this year with Renault.

It is virtually impossible to rate the returning Nick Hulkenberg given he did not start the race so you would have to give Vettel or Alexander Albon the worst ratings simply because of how extreme the gap is between them and their teammates.

Daniil Kvyat blamed himself for his horrible high-speed crash at Maggotts but closer analysis seems that he suffered a rear right tyre failure so it was not his fault.
