DAZN close to £582m BT Sport purchase
Reuters reports this week that DAZN (Pronounced Da-Zone) are close to securing an audacious £582 million acquisition of the BT Sport channel and all it’s sports rights including MotoGP.
DAZN in the UK has only been around for a little over a year and had mostly concentrated on boxing coverage to date. However, in Europe it has become a major player, having secured the rights to Serie A in Italy, and La Liga, MotoGP and Formula 1 in Spain.
BT announced in April 2021 it was looking for investors in it’s BT Sport brand but since rumours of a complete sale have been circulating.
Reuters say that both BT and DAZN have so far yet to comment aswell as Discovery INC who are widely regarded to be the other interested party in taking over the channel.
So who are DAZN? and why are you just probably hearing about them for the first time now? The ambitious broadcaster was founded in 2016 and immediately began buying up sports rights all over the globe committing more than $3 billion in its first couple of years.
What will this mean for British Motorsport on TV? Could BSB be in their sights next? could they even pinch F1 away from Sky?
