Civic Cup: Championship Contenders Occupy Top Three Ahead of Season Finale

Bruce Winfield sailed to pole position ahead of the Milltek Civic Cup season finale. The #37 was 0.347 seconds ahead of his championship rivals, giving him a golden opportunity to seal the title in the opening race later today.

With the championship on the line, all eyes were on the front runners at Donington Park. Bruce Winfield, leading the standings by 21 points on drop scores, set the benchmark throughout.

First driver to drop below the 1min 20sec barrier, then 19sec, setting an incredible 1:18.139, bettering the field by over a second. His Area Motorsport teammate George Alp-Williams was the closest to him during the heart of the session, with all eyes on those behind.

As the drivers approached the final sprint, Alistair Camp knew that he needed to reduce the gap to Winfield to give him the best chance during the race. Setting a 1:18.508, he locked in the front row ahead of fellow title rival Max Lewis, ensuring the championship top three headed the grid. Finishing the session as the only drivers below the 1min 19sec barrier.

Alp-Williams completed the second row with Martin Dalzell in fifth. The Lincoln driver had briefly been second during the final rush of laps, finding himself pushed back in the dying seconds. Series veteran David Buky lines up sixth ahead of Ross Darlington and the final championship contender Paul Taylor, who will have his work cut out from eighth.

Ben Mills, upon his return to the series qualified ninth in the FN2, as Bradley Lane set a final improvement after the flag to jump up to tenth. This demoted rookie Jon Peerless and Jamie Tonks.

In the Invitation Trophy, 2019 Civic Cup champion Lee Deegan headed the field in his #48. Pulling out three tenths over his closest rival Ryan Bensley, the Norfolk driver will need to make the most of the start if he is to challenge the former champ. Completing the second row in the Trophy will be Simon Welch and Mark Hughes.
