British GT: Tomlinson and Wheeler join Assetto for 2022 GT4 campaign

Two famous names in the world of British sportscars will be joining the Intelligent Money British GT Championship in 2022. Freddie Tomlinson, son of Ginetta owner Lawrence Tomlinson, and Joe Wheeler, son of 1981 – 2004 TVR owner Peter Wheeler, have announced that they will be contesting the premier domestic GT racing series in the Assetto Motorsport Ginetta G56 GT4

Freddie Tomlinson began his racing career in the 2018 Ginetta Junior Winter Championship and has contested the Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship for the past three seasons, finishing 9th in the standings in 2021 at the wheel of the #62 R Racing entry.

Joe Wheeler, driving the #88 Assetto Motorsport entry, raced against Tomlinson in the Ginetta Junior Championship, finishing 10th in 2021.

“Ginetta is synonymous with GT4 so to represent my family’s company in British GT – just as my father did – will be a really proud moment,” said Freddie Tomlinson. “But Joe and I are also here to do a job. After a few years in Juniors we feel ready for the next step, despite being one of, if not the, youngest crew on the grid.

“We’ve known each other since we were toddlers but this is the first time that we’ll have worked together in a motorsport environment. I’m really looking forward to that aspect of it.”

Joe Wheeler is keen to build on his experience in Ginettas with his move into the G56 GT4.

“Perhaps some people will focus on Freddie’s Ginetta links but I think my existing relationship with Assetto will prove invaluable this year. The G56 is very different to the Junior car and neither of us have any experience at this level yet but at least knowing the team and how they operate gives us something to work with initially.”

The Ginetta G56 GT4 first raced in 2021 with Charlie Robertson and Mark Sansom finishing third in the British GT GT4 Pro-Am drivers standings.

The 2022 Intelligent Money British GT Championship opens at Oulton Park on April 16 – 18.
