British GT: How can the Title be Won?

British GT prepares for its 300th race this weekend at Donington Park, with the championship as always heading for a thrilling conclusion, with both classes still yet to decide a champion.

Rather like F1’s 1000th race that was celebrated earlier in the year, there is some skeptism about this labelled as the 300th. Especially considering the first race (also held at Donington) was called the National Sports GT Challenge, was run by the BRDC (not SRO) and featured seven Porsche’s with an unrecognisable class format.

Coming into the final round, both GT3 and GT4 remain open with five cars from four different teams and three different engines all fighting for the title in EACH class. In GT3, Barwell Motorsports #72 Lamborghini currently leading the standings, with GT4 currently led by TF Sport’s #97 Aston Martin.

Who can win GT3?

Five cars are in line for the title. With SRO using the one and half distance points system for this weekends 2 Hour race, 37.5 points will be available for the winner.

For those that want a quick explination, the teams other than Barwell need to outscore the #72 by as many points as they are behind coming into the weekend. The current table looks like this;

All eyes will be on Adam Balon and Phil Keen as they look to end the teams championship draught. If Balon and Keen win it’s all over, but here’s the breakdown to what they need others to do should they run into trouble.

Who can win GT4?

While GT3 has five cars in line for the title, GT4 has gone one better with Aston Martin, McLaren and Ford represented by five teams. The sporadicness of the season has been proven with seven race winners from the eight races so far. Only Multimatic Motorsport has seen the flag twice, though an inconsistent season for the Ford Mustang means they sit third in the title fight.

Instead Ash Hand and Tom Canning lead the way with 117.5pts in their TF Sport Aston Martin. The #97 machine secured victory at Spa and was propelled into the points lead, maintaining their position after a podium at Brands Hatch last time out. Their main rival, the #57 HHC will carry slightly more pit stop penalty than them with the #4 Tolman carrying thr most.
