F1: Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg Disqualified From Japanese Grand Prix

Both Renault F1 Team cars of Daniel Ricciardo (3) and Nico Hulkenberg (27) have been disqualified from the results at the Japapnese Grand Prix, which was held on the 13th of October.

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team filled a protest against both cars, claiming that the Renault cars were “using a pre-set, automated brake bias system that does not comply with the regulations”. Racing Point claimed that the system used by Renault was in breach of Articles 11.1.3,11.1.4 and 8.6.3 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations. The regulations prohibit powered devices from altering the brake balance, only driver input can make changes.

After careful consideration from the FIA stewards they concluded that the system was not in breach of Article 8.6.3 FIA Formula One Technical Regulations, which is connected to the FIA Standard ECU. However, they did find that the system does not abide by the Article 27.1 FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations which states that drives should drive the car unaided. The braking system which has come under fire helps the driver to make less adjustments during a single lap on the steering wheel.

The stewards have determined that the system does act as a driver aid and that means the disqualification of both Ricciardo and Hulkenberg from the Japanese event. Renault have been given until 10:00am – Central Daylight Time (time in Mexico) on the 24th of October, to appeal the decision.

If the appeal falls through and the result stands from the hearing then Pierre Gasly and Sergio Perez will both move up a spot to 7th & 8th, with Lance Stroll (9th) and Daniil Kvyat (10th) moving into the Top 10 and scoring points.
