Moto3: Deniz Oncu wins after a dramatic last-lap battle

Deniz Oncu wins the Moto3 race at the Red Bull Ring after an incredible last-lap battle.

Colin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) became the first Dutch in 24 years to start on pole position. Daniel Holgado R(Red Bull KTM Tech3) began the race for second, continuing to battle for the title. Deniz Oncu (Red Bull KTM Ajo) rounded out the front row with the front row being locked out by the Austrian brands.

When the lights went out it was Holgado who took the race lead, with the Veijer dropping down to third. Deniz Oncu was in second with the front three looking to make a gap early in the race.

Silverstone’s race winner David Alonso (GASGAS Aspar Team) was in fourth, looking for back-to-back wins. He was in a battle with Jaume Masia (Leopard racing) who announced that he will step up to Moto2 next season.

British rider, Scott Ogden (VisionTrack Racing Team) was down in 18^th after qualifying in 15^th position. His teammate, Josh Whatley (VisionTrack Racing Team) did not make it in Q2 yesterday and was down in 25^th.

Jaume Masia retired from the race after his bike cut out on lap five of the race, pulling over at the side of the track. This retirement caused the front group to spread out after David Alonso and Ayumu Sasaki Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) had to take avoiding action. It would take another five laps for the group to form again, with Riccardo Rossi (SIC58 Squadra Corse) left behind.

David Alonso took the race lead on lap 12 of the race, with the Spaniard looking desperate to push. Alonso would crash at the chicane leaving himself and the Aspar team disappointed with the result.

Ivan Ortola (Angeluss MTA Team) had an impressive pace onboard his KTM, battling for sixth position. Ortola started the race from 17^th position after not setting a time in Q2 on Saturday. His teammate, Stefano Nepa (Angeluss MTA Team) battled for 10^th position with David Munoz (BOE Motorsports).

The front group began to battle with four laps to go with four riders remaining in the front group. Holgado hit the front of the race and put the hammer down immediately as he tried to create a gap.

Diogo Moreira ( MT Helmets – MSI) had his own battle with Ryusei Yamanaka (GASGAS Aspar Team) for seventh position. Moreira started the race from 19^th position after struggling in qualifying.

At the line it was Deniz Oncu who took the race win after an incredible double overtake at the final corner. Daniel Holgado was second with Sasaki dropping down to third after the final corner. Colin Veijer missed out on a podium after finishing in fourth, ahead of Ivan Ortola.

Riccardo Rossi finished in sixth, finishing ahead of Yamanaka after an incredible Moto3 race throughout the field. Diogo Moreira finished in eighth with David Munoz and Stefano Nepa rounding out the top 10.
