MotoGP: Alex Marquez wins the Silverstone Sprint

Alex Marquez claims his first win ever after winning the MotoGP Sprint.

Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) led the field through turn one after securing pole position in qualifying. Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) made his way into the lead half a lap later, trying to spread out the field.

Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) began to battle, bunching up the group of riders at the front. Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP) was impressive in the opening stages. Making his way into second. Second place would soon into first as Alex Marquez began to try and lead the race.

It was an impressive showing from Augusto Fernandez (Tech3 GASGAS Factory Racing) at the start of the race and was briefly inside the top five. Fernandez qualified in fifth position in the race, showing his pace in tricky conditions.

No riders decided to make the gamble for slick tyres for the MotoGP Sprint race, with all riders choosing the Medium wet tyre.

Aleix Espargaro  (Aprilia Racing) began to make his way closer to the top five, with the Spaniard having to start the race from 12^th. His brother, Pol Espargaro continued to progress with his MotoGP return and was fighting for 14^th. Maverick Vinales (Aprilia Racing)had an incredible opening to his race, fighting for the podium after a great start.

At the front, Alex Marquez extended his race lead to over one second, continuing to dominate in this Sprint.

Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) tumbled down the order at the start of the race and was 14^th. The reigning Champion and the Championship leader tumbled down the order and lost nine positions.

Fabio Quartararo’s struggles continued throughout the Sprint, with the Frenchman unable to find a good feeling on his Yamaha. Franco Morbidelli also had a tough race, battling for 15th place.

Alex Marquez wins at Silverstone

At the line, Alex Marquez crossed the line after ten laps to become a MotoGP winner after four years. Marquez won the race by three-tenths of a second and was dominant throughout the race.

Alex Marquez said: “I knew straight away that it could have been the good one. I started a bit ‘sleepy’ and lost a few places, but I then found pace and confidence. I rode well, even though I made a mistake on the last lap that could have made my life a lot worse.

“Aside from that I was in control, and it was exciting to claim this maiden win, which I dedicate first to this great team.”

Marco Bezzecchi came home in third after a brilliant end to his race, closing the gap to in every sector. The two riders were joined on the podium by Maverick Vinales onboard the Aprilia.

Johann Zarco was in fourth place, leading the way for the Prima Pramac Racing team and was just two seconds from the podium. Aleix Espargaro rounded out the top five with Aprilia having a great start to the second half of the season.
