VW Cup: Wilmot Wins 2020 Crown, with Depper Taking Memorial Trophy

Andy Wilmot would be crowned champion at the end of a nail-biting Volkswagen Racing Cup season. The Team HARD driver finished third to secure not only his fourth silverware of the year but the overall crown at the end of the Donington Park weekend, recording 228 points, 20 more than his closest rival.

In the race, it would be Jack Depper who claimed his third win in as many races to take home a clean sweep of results and with it, the Tom Walker Memorial Trophy. A special weekend for all those involved as for the second time that round, father Martin Depper joined him on the podium.

Polesitter Depper would lead the field away for the final race of the year. Unfortunately for the son of former-BTCC racer driver Martin, he lost out to Team HARD’s Howard Fuller on the opening lap, pressuring the #65 until the safety car was called on the third lap.

A retirement for Touring Car Trophy driver Mark Wakefield halted the action and gave Depper an opportunity to reset.

Fuller though was not about to give up an opportunity at a first win for 2020, defending for all his worth. Jack had a run out of Coppice, easing to the inside of Fuller, but contact on the run to the final chicane saw Fuller spun off into the barrier.

Jack Depper had been disadvantaged into the pit straight as a result, allowing his father to briefly take the lead. The elder Depper would let Jack through soon after, to once again act as a rear gunner to his son, but it would not last as the pressure from Josh Coggan saw him give up ground into Redgate. Martin though fought back, narrowly clinching second place and importantly a second 1-2.

A time penalty for Josh Coggan ensured that newly crowned champion Andy Wilmot completed the podium places. A marvel in consistency, Wilmot sat back and watched the squabbling leaders, knowing the simply finishing was enough to seal him the title. Paul Ivens finished fourth due to Coggan’s time penalty, handing the Silverstone race winner not only the position but fourth in the championship.

Sixth place went to vice-champion Bradley Kent. The Essex and Kent Motorsport Scirocco, unable to extract the best from his car on the day, finishing ahead of Richard Gilbert who leaves the weekend with third in the standings on 154 points.
