BTCC: Ex-champion Andrew Jordan withdraws from 2020 campaign

The BTCC and West Surrey Racing have confirmed that Andrew Jordan will not participate in 2020’s season.

Andrew first raced in the BTCC in 2008, and has since remained on the grid as a title favourite, clinching his only championship in 2013.

Jordan joined WSR in 2017, and has amassed 10 race wins with the team, barely missing out on his second BTCC title in 2019.

Many teams and drivers have struggled with securing funds and sponsorship deals as a result of COVID-19, and it is speculated to be the cause of Jordan’s departure, but this is not yet confirmed.

WSR now have a vacant seat in the team alongside Tom Oliphant and defending champion Colin Turkington.

Speaking from a post on Instagram, Jordan said:

“After much thought and consideration, I have made the difficult decision to not compete in the BTCC 2020 season with Team BMW.

“The current climate has impacted all of us more than we could ever have anticipated. Unfortunately, this has placed me in a position where my head had to overrule my heart, and the tough decision was made to not compete this season.

“For now, I’m going to take stock and plan what our new future looks like. Wherever that might be, I hope we can meet again soon.”

Dick Bennetts, Team Principal, said:

“AJ has made a huge contribution to our BTCC success since 2017 – coming so close to winning last year’s title – and we’re sorry to be losing him. On behalf of all at WSR and Team BMW, we thank him for our seasons together and wish him well for the future.”

The BTCC’s 2020 restart round is scheduled to take place on 1-2 August at Donington Park.
