IndyCar: Ex-Driver Robbie Buhl to Debut New Team At Indianapolis

A new one-off NTT IndyCar Series team, Citrone/Buhl Autosport, is aiming to make its debut in this year’s Grand Prix of Indianapolis and continue on to enter the 104th Running of the Indianapolis 500 in May.

Citrone/Buhl Autosport is a partnership between Robert and Nick Citrone, Tom and former IndyCar driver Robbie Buhl.

Robert Citrone is founder of Discovery Capital Management and a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and his son Nick is a data analytics coordinator for the NHL team the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Buhl brothers Robbie and Tom own Buhl Sport Detroit, a motorsports marketing company that operates an ARX (Americas Rallycross) team, Racing4Detroit.

Robbie Buhl entered 78 IndyCar races between 1993 and 2004, including eight Indy 500 starts, although not winning any major events during this time. Buhl was also a minority owner and a team principal of DRR, along with Dennis Reinbold.

Citrone and Buhl, teamed up in 2019 with plans for entering this year’s Indy 500, and furthermore seeking more opportunities if all went well. The team now aims to make its race debut on the IMS road course two weeks earlier in preparation for the Indy 500.

Details such as engine supplier and driver/s remain unconfirmed, but the team’s press release stated;

“We see this as the start of a continued racing endeavor with aspiration of more entries to races in the future.”
