Billy Monger Confirmed for F3 Opener Ahead of Oulton

Billy Monger, the double-amputee driver has finally announced that he’ll be racing in the BRDC British F3 Championship. The 18-year-old who has been expected to compete in the series for over two months has been confirmed ahead of the opening round at Oulton Park this weekend.

Monger has been testing with the Carlin team recently, following the FIA’s decision to change the rules to allow disabled drivers to race in single-seaters. While not confirmed yet, it was suspected that all three seats had been filled when Clement Novalak confirmed in an interview that he’d be racing in the series.

Since then, the MSV has allowed BRDC F3 teams to run four cars, rather than the three they had been restricted to prior to this season, with Carlin buying a Tatuus-Cosworth machine off of Sean Walkinshaw Racing in order to adapt for Monger.

In last weeks test at Spa-Francorchamps, Monger was busy with the Carlin outfit, finishing eleventh out of sixteenth in the overall order. He’ll join Nicolai Kjaergaard and Renault Sport Academy driver Sun Yue Yang at the team, with Monger finishing sixth, under a tenth behind Kjaergaard during the Media Day tests.

Over Twitter, Monger sent this tweet in response to the news.

This implies that a full season campaign is still to be confirmed, with Novalak’s lack of confirmation leaving questions on whether Carlin will run four cars at the opening round.

Prior to 2018, Monger raced in the Ginetta Junior Championship, finishing fifth overall, before stepping up to the F4 British Championship. While racing for JHR Developments at the Donington Park last year, Monger collided with the stationary Patrik Pasma resulting in the loss of the lower half of his legs. He had been leading the Challenge Cup.

The BRDC British F3 Championship kicks off at Oulton Park this weekend.
