Mamola to become MotoGP Legend at Americas GP

Four-time 500cc runner up Randy Mamola will be inducted into the World Championship Hall of Fame this season, with the ceremony set for the Americas GP in Austin, Texas. Mamola won a total of 13 races across 8 seasons, on Honda, Yamaha but firstly Suzuki machinery. Mamola has been a fixture in the Grand Prix paddock too, as he was the pilot of the Ducati two-seater experience for many years, as well as being a regular voice to British viewers between 2003 and 2013, on Eurosport UK, alongside Toby Moody and Julian Ryder.

Mamola reacted, saying: “I didn’t expect it but it was a pleasant surprise to start my day when I got the call! When I told my wife and son, as you can imagine it was huge congratulations but then ‘Oh no! Now we have to live with a legend!’ MotoGP is my life and I’ve been in the paddock for 39 years. I’ve seen so many things from when I was first in the paddock at 19 and it’s an honour and a privilege for me to be included in such a high level group of riders.
There were just two seasons where Mamola failed to achieve a podium – in 1989 and 1990. He came close at the 1990 Belgian Grand Prix, when he crashed out of third in what was to be the final ever Belgian Grand Prix to-date. His last podium came at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 1992, when he was 3^rd behind ex-champion Eddie Lawson and 2^nd place rider, Doug Chandler. This was also the last Hungarian Grand Prix.

Mamola will join a long list of greats that have been made MotoGP™ Legends that includes Giacomo Agostini, Mick Doohan, Geoff Duke, Wayne Gardner, Mike Hailwood, Daijiro Kato, Eddie Lawson, Anton Mang, Angel Nieto, Wayne Rainey, Phil Read, Jim Redman, Kenny Roberts, Jarno Saarinen, Kevin Schwantz, Barry Sheene, Marco Simoncelli, Freddie Spencer, Casey Stoner, John Surtees, Carlo Ubbiali, Alex Crivillé, Franco Uncini, Marco Lucchinelli and the late Nicky Hayden.
